The Argyle Diamonds and their Importance

We have become so used to the presence of diamonds in our lives, that we probably don't think about where they come from of how they were formed. Stroll past any mall jewellery shop or go online to www.mydiamonds.com.au and all we see is the scintillation, the sparkle and the sheer beauty of each diamond engagement ring, wedding band, diamond pendant or diamond stud earrings.

Diamonds are unique in their make up and it is hard to believe that these stunning gems began their lives as small pieces of carbon buried deep within the earth, which has been compressed over time to turn them into our sparkling beauties. The word 'diamond' is derived from the 'adamas', a Greek word which translates to 'unconquerable.'

We Have Conquered Them
Although the word 'adamas' meaning unconquerable probably refers to the fact that diamond is the hardest substance in the world, it cannot mean that man is unable to conquer them. For it is because men in their droves, explored areas of diamond mining to retrieve from deep within the ground, the unrefined and rough versions of what we wear today.

This does not come about without a great deal of work and effort, from the mining of the stones, the marketing and then of course, cutting and refining.

Australia's Diamond Mines

In Western Australia, the East Kimberley region is home to the Argyle Diamond Mine and is the largest diamond producer in the world by volume. It is however, not the leader by value. It's main claim to fame is that it produces over 90% of the world's supply of pink diamonds, one of the most collectable hues of fancy coloured diamonds. Other fancy coloured diamonds are now becoming just as popular, such as the red, black and the new chocolate diamonds.

The Argyle mine is owned by the Rio Tinto Group, that also owns the Murowa Diamond Mine in Zimbabwe and the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada.

The Annual Diamond Tender
As we have mentioned earlier, Australian diamond mines in Kimberley are famous for the fancy coloured diamonds that are found around and within the mine. Some of these diamonds are so exquisite and so valuable, that they are offered in the Argyle Pink Diamond Tender. For every 1000,000 carats (about 200kg) of rough pink diamonds produced at the Argyle, only 1 carat (0.20g) will be offered for the sale at this famous diamond tender.

Attendance at this sale will be by invitation only, and is an event which is a highlight in the calender of those who collect coloured diamonds. Even the catalogue and website is strictly monitored with access highly prized.

A new sale of coloured diamonds was announced in March 2009. This was known as the 'Once in a Blue Moon' collection and comprised of exquisite blue and violet diamonds, at a weight in total of 287 carats. These diamonds had been sourced over many years mining at the Argyle.
