Some connoisseurs of diamonds may say that 'cut' is the most important of the 4Cs. Others will say that clarity reigns supreme, or it's the colour that defines a diamond. The cut certainly determines the scintillation and fire within a stone. And we all know that these are the qualities that attract us.

Again, it is the experts at GIA who have provided us with a cut quality grade for round brilliant diamonds that fall in the D to Z colour range.

After the clarity and colour grading process, it's polish and symmetry details, it's facet angles and measurements are all used to determine it's GIA Cut Grade. A diamond's fire and scintillation, (the sparkle and pattern that the sparkle makes), it's brightness and fire, the durability of the stone and it's weight ratio are all elements that must be taken into consideration when the final assessment of cut quality is made.

The cut quality will influence the beauty and allure of a diamond. The 58 facets of a round brilliant diamond, the traditional number reputed to accentuate it's sparkle, must be expertly and creatively cut by a master craftsman if the diamond is to become a real beauty.

Precision cut, some facets are as small as two millimetres in diameter so we would expect that an artisan master jeweller, such as the master jeweller at My Diamonds to be our chosen craftsman for cutting our precious stones.

The three important attributes of a cut diamond are:
- 1. The diamond's brilliance - This is the light that is reflected from a diamond
- 2. The diamond's fire - The dispersion of light that results in the colours of the spectrum
- 3. The diamond's scintillation - The alluring sparkle and flashes of light that attract us when the diamond is moved.

The standard for a cut diamond is the round brilliant and is the shape most often incorporated in diamond jewellery. Other shapes are known as fancy shapes and at My Diamonds we offer our customers round, princess, emerald, pear, cushion, oval, heart, asscher, marquise, radiant and trilliant. All of the shapes in the My Diamond collection are becoming increasingly popular with our clients.

Each shape has a different personality and each client will have an individual view of how they wish their finished piece to look. Some will want a contemporary diamond engagement ring, so will possibly choose a round brilliant cut solitaire or an emerald cut. For the more traditional or vintage some will choose a cushion shape or the very romantic heart shape.

In terms of value however, the cut of the diamond will be attributed to it's polish and symmetry. To get an idea of this, try to view a standard round brilliant cut diamond from the side. It is made up of the crown, girdle and pavilion.

This stunning cut of diamond is usually of 57 or 58 facets, the 58th, a tiny facet that is situated at the bottom of the pavilion. This facet is the diamond's culet. The table of the diamond is at the top and it is usually looking down at this facet from where we view a diamond.

The proportions of the diamond will take into consideration the size of the table facet, the angle of the crown and the depth of the pavilion. Well cut diamonds with perfect proportions will allow light to be emitted from the crown, giving us that exquisite sparkle that we love and covet.
