Diamond Jewellery Appraisals and What You Should Know

More and more, reputable diamond and jewellery retailers are advising customers to acquire the services of independent appraisers whose skills have become even more important in today's ever changing market place. There are many issues to consider when purchasing a diamond, not least the cost to value and whether it is acceptable. Apart from that, there are ethical and trust issues to be considered, and without the correct advice and information no purchaser can feel totally safe.

Diamond Appraisal Facts
There are a number of reasons why it is wise to use a third party appraiser when purchasing your diamond. There are unfortunately a number of unscrupulous dealers in the global marketplace who will happily pass a stone onto you that is not what it purports to be. An appraiser will ask:~

  • Is the stone real? Has it been altered in any way, or treated with an inferior substance? Has the colour been altered, or is the stone in fact man made.
  • Has the stone sustained any damage that the naked eye cannot see
  • Has the seller provided the stone that was agreed upon, or is it an inferior substitute.
  • What about the grading certificates. Are they genuine, accurate and unaltered.
  • Has the stone been cut correctly and by a craftsman.
  • Are you getting what you've paid for.

These are just some of the issues covered by an appraiser. Getting some of the above wrong could result in the loss of many dollars and much consternation and disappointment. When buying a house, another high value commodity, we would always enlist the services of an expert like a surveyor. Diamond purchasers should apply the same principals to their diamond.

The Diamond Appraiser You Choose
Appraisers have two main functions. The first is to make sure that your diamond is authentic and that you are getting the stone you expected...in other words, that you receive the stone you have paid for. The second function is to give the stone the correct market value if sold on the open market of the day.

For the first function, the appraiser will use gemmology, a scientific process that is taught by various gemmology laboratories around the world, such as GIA or HRD. Most appraisers will have GG after their names. This stands for Graduate Gemmologist. The approach to grading diamonds is rigorous and is carried out within a standardized environment. Each stone will be studied under a microscope and compared for colour, microscopic inclusions, cutting, carat weight and fluorescence.

Independent Appraisal Companies
There are now many appraisal companies who are independent of diamond companies or store appraisers. They will simply provide an appraisal service regardless of the customer or stone. If you decide to use an independent appraiser it is always wise to check testimonials of past customers or research their reputation.

Most of the appraisers are as qualified as those affiliated to gem companies and carry the highest gemmology qualifications. They provide a valuable service to purchasers of diamonds and are an important part of the acquisition of a diamond. In Australia all appraisals should be done by a registered members of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV)
