| Congratulations! So you want to surprise your girl with a proposal of marriage and an engagement ring? You love her, you have thought about for some time, and now you are ready to ask that all important question right? You can see the romantic scene it in your mind's eye - your true love - over the moon and totally in love with you and the ring you chose for her. It is going to be a wonderful moment, and you want it to be so memorable you can tell your grandchildren about it! Well, careful planning is the number one ingredient for this to be the best success story, so here are a few suggestions to make this moment memorable, special and successful. |

| The Proposal – Where, When and How |
| Where are you planning to propose? You should carefully consider all aspects of the proposal before you make it. For example, perhaps you should think twice about a public proposal. This seems to work well in the movies when everyone around gives a big cheer when she says yes, but in reality, what if she is not ready and says no? Also, if you are at a party with friends etc., it really puts her in a difficult spot. Would you really want her to say yes just to save you embarrassment in front of your friends? Even if you are already certain she will say yes, then unless she is a natural extravert, chances are she would prefer it to be in a lovely private setting where she can be spontaneous in her response and reaction (which might work to your advantage!) |

| But also be prepared for her to be so surprised that she may panic and hesitate. After the proposal and acceptance, you can return to your friends together to make the happy announcement and show off the beautiful engagement ring you have surprised her with. |

| The Engagement Ring |
| So, how are you going to choose an engagement ring she will love, which is the exact one she would have chosen for herself? This is going to require some clever detective work on your part. You could enlist the help of her mother, sisters, friends, etc., but you run the risk of them spoiling the surprise. You will need to find out a few things before you choose the engagement ring:- |

- Observe what she already wears and admires in shop windows, in catalogues or on her friends.

- The style she likes - This includes the stone(s) and gold (white gold, yellow gold, platinum or a mixture). The gold should be easy enough because, more than likely, she already has some jewellery and you can ask her what sort of gold it is.

- There are many different settings, and it should be easy enough to discuss the pros and cons of different settings while window shopping with her.

- Diamonds are the standard, but perhaps she would prefer something like a diamond AND her birthstone. Don’t get this wrong.

- Size - This could be the most difficult part to keep secret. If you can get hold of a ring she already wears, that makes it easy, but you may need to be inventive with ring shaped objects. It is better for the ring to be a little large than too small, as it can be resized by the jeweller.
