You've decided to buy a diamond...maybe for an engagement ring or perhaps as a wonderful gift that will stand the test of time. Of course, the first thing that you see is that unmistakeable sparkle that comes from the diamond, tempting you to buy. But wait. Before you make that all important purchase, there are other considerations. For example, have you considered the 4C's?

Why You Should Learn About the 4C's
Every diamond is graded by laboratories such as GIA, HRD and AGS and each diamond is accompanied by a diamond grading report or dossier. All certified diamonds are registered with the laboratory that tested and graded the diamond. This is the standard and your assurance that when your purchase your diamond, you are actually receiving the diamond that you have chosen. Some diamonds carry a laser inscription on the girdle of the stone. These certifications and dossiers are your security and imperative when you wish to insure your precious jewel.

The 4C's is a major part of your certification. It stands for Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. Knowing the results of the diamond grading on your diamond means that you know everything that you should know about the diamond that you wish to purchase before you buy. Here we'll take each 'C' in turn:~

• Cut ~ The cut of a diamond is often considered the most important C because it determines the diamonds brilliance and the amount of light that emanates from each facet. The My Diamonds artisan diamond master craftsmen, ensure that each stone is cut to achieve maximum sparkle

• Colour ~ A diamond will be graded on colour and the intensity of that colour. For example diamonds that are pure white and contain no colour often receive higher grades than other hues. The diamonds with the rarest colour scales, pink would determine that these diamonds attract the highest cost. Recently, an extremely rare pink diamond was sold for $46US at Sotheby's in Geneva. It was purchased by Laurence Graff, a British diamond collector.

• Clarity ~ The majority of diamonds have tiny imperfections. They are of course an organic, natural substance and for a diamond to have absolutely no imperfections is rare indeed. These diamonds command the highest grades, and therefore the highest price.

• Carat Weight ~ Most people are familiar with the term 'carat'. In this case it is specifically a measure of a diamond's weight. Obviously the larger the carat, the more expensive the stone.
