  Trusted Diamond Grading Laboratories

My Diamonds know the value of the diamond grading certificate and what it means to their customers. Without this essential certificate, the diamond's properties cannot be verified and would be very difficult to insure.

There are various organisations that provide diamond grading certificates, the most widely recognised being

• GIA ~ The Gemological Institute of America,
• HRD Antwerp ~ Hoge Raad voor Diamant, which is Europe's counterpart in Europe,
• AGS ~ The American Gem Society
• IGA ~ the International Gemological Institute, which focuses mainly on diamond engagement ring appraisals
• PGGL ~ located in Philadelphia, PA.
• AGI ~ with laboratories in Belgium, UK and Thailand and competes with GIA and HRD in Europe
• EGL ~ European Gemological Laboratory, which is an independent network of grading laboratories

My Diamonds www.mydiamonds.com.au employ GIA, HRD Antwerp and AGS to grade their collections of loose diamonds and pre-set diamond engagement rings, wedding rings and jewellery for Christmas gifts.

Who issues Diamond Grading Certificates and Why?
Diamond grading certificates are often referred to as the fifth C, in addition to the recognised 4Cs; carat weight, cut, clarity and colour.

Certificates are issued by all of the laboratories listed above. My Diamonds have three favourite laboratories that they entrust their diamond certifications to; GIA, HRD and AGS and have been using their expertise and knowledge to safeguard their customers purchases for many years. These certifications are known as 'trusted certificates.'

Why Avoid Non-Trusted Certificates
A diamond with no certificate should flag up potential problems for the purchaser. It is likely that he will get a sub-standard stone, or a stone that has inclusions or blemishes that have not been highlighted. The stone may have been treated to make it appear far better than it actually is, and unscrupulous diamond retailers and sellers have been know to apply these methods to make a sale.

They may also supply certificates from 'non-trusted' sources, laboratories that are not globally recognised by the diamond industry, or perhaps design one themselves. They will endeavour perhaps to grade the diamonds too generously, grading an H colour diamond as an F, or an S12 diamond as an S11. This would greatly effect the value and perception of the diamond. To avoid buying an uncertified diamond, go to an honest diamond retailer such as My Diamonds ~ www.mydiamonds.com.au where every diamond has been given certification by a recognised laboratory.

Types of Certificate
There are a number of different types of certificates that are issued by grading agencies. All laboratories have different names for their certificates. This differentiates different brands in the market. For example:~

• GIA certificates are GIA Diamond Dossier or a GIA Diamond Report
• AGS certificates are Diamond Quality Documents, Diamond Quality Reports or Diamond Quality Analyses

Certification v Appraisal
The certification of a diamond is carried out from a scientific viewpoint and will accompany a loose diamond throughout it's life. An appraisal is a monetary viewpoint.

The appraisal of a stone can vary depending on the fluctuations of the market and is more accurately carried out on a loose stone.
