Taking Care of Your Diamond

Diamond is a durable mineral, therefore perfect for everyday wear. This makes it resistant to damage and the ideal gem-stone for setting in engagement rings, or wedding bands.

However, the fact that this type of jewellery is generally used every day will mean that it is more susceptible to losing its beauty through housework; the use of cleaning products and hand lotions. Some of these products will build up on the diamonds surface and detract from its exquisite beauty, leaving a film which dampens its fire and light. All diamonds need care and attention. At Monroe Yorke Diamonds we recommend you carry this out on a regular basis, perhaps every six months or so, depending on how much the diamond has been exposed to these elements.

Below are some suggestions on ways that you can keep your diamond engagement ring in pristine condition.

JEWELLERY HOME CARE

Maintaining the brilliance of your diamond at home is fairly simple. A solution can be made of one part ammonia and six parts water. You could use an old toothbrush or any soft-bristled brush to loosen dirt or grease. Resist the urge to clean the metal this way as brushing could cause scratching.

STORING YOUR RING

We’ve mentioned that diamonds are a very durable material, yet contact with another diamond will easily scratch it. To store jewellery, Monroe Yorke Diamonds advises that you use a fabric-lined jewellery case, particularly if you are travelling. Don’t be tempted to store jewellery all together in a jewellery pouch. There should be one pouch for each piece. This will ensure your jewellery is kept in pristine condition, and without damage.

SECURITY AND CLEANING

We Diamonds advise that you inspect your jewellery regularly for any prongs that have become bent or loosened. Visit or send your diamond engagement ring to Monroe Yorke Diamonds every year, to ensure the mounting is as it should be. Your favourite jeweller can also clean and polish your engagement ring, restoring it to its previous sparkle.
