  • It's Nearly NEW YEAR at My Diamonds

It's that time again ,when everyone is considering their New Year's Resolutions.  Of course, at My Diamonds, we would recommend that one of your resolutions should be to buy and wear as many diamonds as possible:Not only are they a good investment, but they look sensational.

Market forces over the last two or three years have made the market place for diamonds difficult, which is no different to any other world commodity, but our long-term love affair with these fabulous precious gems has prevented them falling too low in the sparkling firmament.  Consumers are still buying diamonds because we love them.  2013 will still see plenty of diamond sales, due to the upsurge in engagements and weddings.  Celebrities too are doing their bit to buoy up the diamond market by publicizing their purchases of diamond engagement rings and diamond wedding bands.

Although diamond prices have remained at historically elevated levels, in the first three months of the year diamond prices declined.  This proved to create stability in the diamond market, rather than some of the unprecedented highs shown in previous years records.  Certainly, the diamond industry was in much better shape than in the same months of 2011, so the outlook is set positive.

Many retailers are bullish about the future of the industry, stating that the industry has met targets and looks set fair for 2013.

Positive thinking seems to be the key.  The Diamond Jubilee in the UK saw many investors keen to be part of the celebration by purchasing high quality diamonds that will certainly retain their value. Prices are set to rise in 2013 so a purchase now could be pertinent.

A major key to success is customer service.  The savvy purchaser knows that to succeed, higher quality diamonds is the way forward.  Many purchasers in the West prefer larger, less high quality stones.  A turnaround in this thinking could save the day and investors are certainly aware of this.  It's really up to diamond retailers to make sure their customer service is second to none.

Go to the diamond collection pages of My Diamonds and choose your favourite design or favourite loose diamonds.  Contact My Diamonds and experience for yourself the high standard of customer service they offer.  It is second to none!

  • THE MOUSSAIEF RED DIAMOND No.9 of the Top Ten

The Moussaief Red Diamond was discovered in 1990 by a Brazilian farmer.  It was found in the Abaetezinho River which runs through a region known as Alto Paranaiba.  This region is well known as a source of large fancy coloured diamonds.  When found the rough stone weighed 13.9 carats.

The William Goldberg Diamond Corporation purchased and cut the diamond which was then known as The Red Shield.  The cut diamond now measures 5.11 carats and is a triangular brilliant cut diamond, sometimes referred to as a trilliant cut.  It is rated in colour as a Fancy Red by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and is the world's largest known red diamond.

Between 2001 and 2002, the diamond was purchased by Shlomo Moussaief, and Israeli born jewellery dealer in London and currently owned by Moussaief Jewellers Limited.

  • Diamond Portfolio Sale in Singapore ~ Diamonds A Solid Investment

Marilyn Monroe sang, 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' and it would seem that she was absolutely right all those years ago.  The value of diamonds is set to rocket if you believe Shlomo Tidhar, the CEO of SDX, the Singapore Diamond Exchange. It has been reported on the BBC'S Asia Business Report that diamonds are a solid investment. They say:~

"Throughout the world, diamonds are widely recognised as symbols of distinguished status. As global economies evolve and portfolios diversify, these precious gems have come to be considered as an alternative investment asset class.

In the past decade, polished diamonds have witnessed growing consumer demand, predominantly from China, India and Russia. At the same time, global rough diamond supplies are contracting. These two opposing forces are leading to continued long-term price increases of diamonds of all sizes.

At Singapore Diamond Exchange, we have developed a uniquely different approach to helping you source and manage these precious assets. Drawing on our collective expertise and strategic alliances, we offer a unique opportunity to invest in diamonds at wholesale prices as an alternative investment asset class for medium to long-term periods."

All of this will be fantastic news for those of us who have always considered diamonds to be a real investment.  Many diamond portfolios are being sold due to the downturn and although recently the price of a diamond has decreased, there is a sign that diamond prices will hold their own and indeed, increase in price.

At My Diamonds we have always held the view that the diamond is the most beautiful and unique investment you can buy.  But a diamond should not just be seen as an investment.  We carry a scintillating, breath taking collection of diamonds, either loose diamonds to be made in to stunning engagement rings, or in pre-designed jewellery, crafted by our in-house artisan jeweller.  By all means purchase diamonds as an investment, but for wedding rings, wedding bands, diamond engagement rings and diamond gifts, they are very difficult to beat.  Their sparkle and flash of brilliance will remind you just how beautiful they really are.  A diamond says 'forever'.

  • The 4Cs - The CUT of Your Diamond

We began the 4Cs in our last post, looking at the grading of colour within a diamond.  This post is another of the 4Cs ~ the Cut, possibly the most overlooked of the 4Cs.

The diamond cut refers to the angles and proportions of the rough stone, when it's placed into the hands of an expert diamond cutter.  He will take the rough stone and examine it from all angles, determining the cut that will suit the natural stone - looking for the most fire and scintillation.  The diamond cut is the only one of the 4Cs not naturally present when the mineral is hewn from diamond mines or recovered from alluvial deposits.

An experienced diamond cutter such as the artisan master craftsman at My Diamonds will enhance the stone ~ looking at how natural light reflects and sparkles in the natural form.  The cutter will then cut the stone to the shape he has chosen, polishing the usual 58 facets until they gleam.  These tiny facets are the table, crown, pavilion, girdle and the culet, - the pointed end of the diamond that sits in the appropriate mount.
For a purchaser of a diamond, these terms will not be familiar to you. You will judge your diamond on the fire emitting from the stone - the brilliance as you turn it this way and that.  The only time you will consider the cut of the diamond is when you receive your GIA or HRD grading report from My Diamonds.  Because My Diamonds diamonds are sourced from reliable diamond merchants and are of an extremely high quality, each diamond, whether loose or in a         pre-designed diamond engagement ring will be accompanied by a diamond grading report.  It is on this report you will have the true value and quality of your diamond.

The absolute beauty and stunning scintillation of your diamond will be on her hand, where it will be a reminder of everlasting love.

  • The 4Cs - The COLOUR of Your Diamond

In past posts we have talked about the 4Cs of diamond grading and where the grading values are on a Grading Certificate.  For my Diamonds, Australia on of Australia's foremost diamond retailers this is usually carried out by GIA or HRD.  One of the four main characteristics of a diamond is colour - an important consideration when purchasing your diamond.

At My Diamonds we try to make the distinctions easier to understand before you purchase, and explain why certain colours of diamonds will command higher prices.

Loose diamonds must be graded before they are mounted or put in a setting.  This is because surrounding colours can permeate the true colour of the stone.  For example a yellow gold setting will make a diamond look less yellow.  A white gold or platinum setting will emphasise colour.

    • G~H~I~J  Nearly colourless
    • K~L~M Faintly tinted, usually yellow
    • N~O~P~Q~R  Lightly tinted, usually yellow.  Tint can be seen with the naked eye
    • S~T~U~V~W~X~Y~Z  Tinted, usually yellow, may progress to brownish.  Tint visible to the naked eye.
    • These grades apply to diamonds that are colourless, or those that are yellow through yellowish brown, as in the above diagram.  They do not apply to fancy coloured diamonds.  Fancy coloured diamonds  have separate colour grading standards.
    • When referring to colour, a grading report will grade a diamond's lack of colour or whiteness.
    • D is the highest colour grade with Z being the lowest

My Diamonds will always ensure you know your diamond before purchase.  Their professional diamond specialists are always on hand to provide information and answers to queries.  My Diamonds will guide you to the diamond of your dreams, whether in a superb pre-designed ring, or an exquisite diamond in a diamond engagement ring of your own design.

  • The World Diamond Capital ~ Antwerp, Belgium

If you're a newcomer to the fabulous world of diamonds, it may be interesting for you to know that currently, 80% of rough diamonds, and 60% of polished diamonds pass through the hallowed diamond quarter of Antwerp, the diamond industry's city of excellence.

Antwerp is the third largest port in the world, and a municipality and  capital of the Antwerp province in Flanders.

It was all started by Hendrik Cassiers who founded the first diamond cutting company outside Antwerp in Grobbendon, at the end of the 19th Century.  He and Frans Dela Montagne laid the foundations of the industry, which settled in Nijlen, Herenthout, Bevel, Kessel, Vorselaar and Berlaar.

One man, Romi Goldmuntz, who was born in 1882, was the catalyst for the survival of the diamond business in Antwerp.  His diamond company employed about 600 workers in 1920 and he and his brother Leopold had business connections with the Diamond Trading Company.  DTC is a subsidiary of the very famous De Beers.  It was Romi Goldmuntz who in 1918, after the end of the First World War, persuaded exiles in the Netherlands to return to Antwerp and continue working the diamond industry.

From these shaky beginnings grew the community of diamond specialist, craftsmen and experts who have developed and nurtured this wonderful industry, ensuring the rest of the world can enjoy the most amazing diamonds and diamond jewellery.  He also founded the Diamond Office in Antwerp, and other institutions are also named after him.  'Cut in Antwerp' is the most sought after trademark in the diamond industry, because with it translates to excellence and quality.

My Diamonds, www.mydiamonds.com.au offers client artisan craftsmen, with their chief craftsman experiencing his training in Antwerp.  This is reflected in the exquisite diamond engagement rings, diamond wedding rings and loose diamonds in the My Diamonds collection.

  • The Influence of 1950s Style Jewellery of Diamond Jewellery Trends Today

After World War 2 life began to return to a semblance of normality. Styles of the 1940s began to change. This was necessary for people to be able to move on from a period of scarcity. No longer were women making wedding dresses from parachute silk, or drawing lines on the backs of their legs with gravy browning to resemble silk stockings.

When material that had been impossible to source during the war suddenly began to appear again on the open market, it brought with it innovative designs in every aspect of life, not least in the diamond jewellery trade.

In 1951, the Festival of Britain took place, held to encourage the people of that country to get over the war and to boost morale. Many other countries, including Australia, not only took their lead from countries getting back on their feet, but were also able to use the talents of creative designers to offer revolutionary styling to their customers. People were desperate to throw off the mantle of uncertainty that had been laying over them for more than five years and to get back to living again.

There were many exhibitors at the exhibition – much of the exhibits featured space age designs. All of the different exhibits filtered into our way of life, including the jewellery we wore. War time restrictions were at last lifted and costume jewellery began to make an appearance again. Woman wanted to wear beautiful things again, and the fashions of the day reflected this. Many woman looked to the icons of the day, such as Jayne Mansfield, an American actress who became an international sex symbol during the 50s and signed long term with 20th Century Fox and appeared in films such as 'A Girl Can't Help It.'  She has been credited as being the actress who heralded the global sexual revolution; Brigitte Bardot; and of course the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe who was rarely seen without her diamond earrings and who also starred in the movie 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes,' and who also recorded the song 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend,' from the film.

Here are some stunning examples of vintage, yet contemporary diamond dress rings from My Diamonds.
