This Diamond Buying Guide from Monroe Yorke Diamonds is designed to give you practical tools and insights to empower you to evaluate the quality of the diamond you are about to purchase. We hope this information will give you the confidence to make purchasing your diamond an enjoyable experience.
Diamonds are rare, beautiful and are to be treasured for now and forever. Every diamond is unique and has a set of characteristics that gives each diamond its intrinsic value. Until the middle of the last century, there were no industry accepted standards by which the quality of diamonds could be judged. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was the first to create a globally consistent standard for describing diamonds: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight. Today, the 4Cs of diamond quality represents universal best practice for evaluating the quality of any diamond anywhere in the world. If a diamond is evaluated using the 4Cs method, as a customer you can have the confidence of knowing exactly what you are about to purchase.
The Cut is often described as the most important element of the 4Cs as it optimises the fire and brilliance of the diamond. The diamond you have chosen may have an excellent colour grade or good clarity, but if the cutter has not cut the stone to showcase its fire and brilliance, the diamond will not emanate that sparkle that is synonymous with diamonds. At Monroe Yorke Diamonds we recommend that our customers look for a diamond with a cut grade of 'good' or better and we would be only too happy to guide you in selecting the best Cut.
The second element of the 4Cs impacting a diamond’s quality is colour. The colour grade of a diamond will determine the amount of colour the diamond has, or more accurately, doesn't have. The less colour within the stone, the higher the colour grade. At Monroe Yorke Diamonds we recommend that when purchasing a diamond for your once in a life time engagement ring you aim for a diamond with a colour H or higher. For other types of jewellery such as diamond earrings or pendants, diamonds of a lower colour grade can still be used to create beautiful pieces of jewellery.
To a grading laboratory such as GIA, AGS or HRD, the third factor influencing diamond quality is clarity. When a diamond is examined under a 10 times magnification no inclusions or imperfections should be visible within the stone. These imperfections or inclusions might not be important to a purchaser. These inclusions will not detract from the quality of a diamond because most imperfections are not visible to the naked eye (looking at diamond without magnification). At Monroe Yorke Diamonds, we consider that a clarity grade of 'VS2', with very small inclusions, so infinitesimal that they are not noticeable will be an acceptable clarity grade. For those with a slightly lower budget, the 'SI1' and SI2' grades offer purchasers great value for money. Any diamond that has inclusions or imperfections that are visible to the naked eye will have a clarity grade lower than 'SI2'.
On rare occasions, some diamonds with clarity grades of 'SI1' and 'SI2' also have inclusions visible to the naked eye and these are described as “not eye clean”.
Speak with a professional Diamond Specialist at Monroe Yorke Diamonds on 1800 766 567 before purchasing an 'SI1' or 'SI2' clarity diamond. Our team will ensure that the diamond you purchase is completely eye clean.
While it is true that the size of your budget will ultimately determine the size of your diamond, if your heart desires a larger diamond then you can purchase a larger diamond by compromising on higher grades of Cut, Colour and Clarity. Talk to us today about how you can make that compromise at the best price point to still retain that intrinsic value of the stone……as with most things in life, it’s about finding the right balance.
While we hope that this Diamond Buying Guide is informative, it is intended to provide you with general advice that doesn’t take into account your personal taste and budget. We look forward to providing you with a personalised consultation with one of our Diamond Specialists to help you find that perfect diamond.
There are many exquisite diamond shapes to choose from, such as the very popular brilliant cut (round) or the stunning princess (square) cut. Other shapes are oval, emerald, pear, cushion, heart, asscher, marquise, radiant and trilliant. For more information regarding diamond shapes, click here.
At Monroe Yorke Diamonds, we focus on the importance of the diamond grading certificate that accompanies each diamond we source for our customers. This is the certification that verifies the grades and other information that has been attributed to the diamond.
Our diamonds are certificated by an independent diamond grading laboratory such as GIA, AGS or HRD. This means that you can have peace of mind that your chosen diamond has been graded by an unbiased grading authority. There are many laboratories around the world that certify diamonds however we only deal in diamonds certified by GIA, AGS or HRD. So when a retailer offers you a certificated diamond, make sure you know which grading laboratory was responsible for authenticating the diamond you are about to purchase. If you are unsure give us a call and we’d be only too happy to guide you.
All diamonds over 0.50ct sold by Monroe Yorke Diamonds are accompanied by an independent certificate from highly respected diamond grading laboratories with stringent grading standard, namely:
- GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
- HRD Antwerp
- AGS (American Gemmological Society)
At Monroe Yorke Diamonds, we do not sell diamonds graded from other laboratories that tend to have less stringent grading standards.
Diamond Prices Explained
If you purchase a diamond from a brick and mortar retail jeweller, it is likely that you will pay a much higher price than from a direct wholesale supplier such as Monroe Yorke Diamonds. A retailer selling from a shop will have overheads to cover including inventory, rent, staff costs and advertising. These costs will be passed on to you, the customer.
In contrast to the typical brick and mortar jewellery shops, we are diamond wholesalers who can source you the most beautiful diamonds from any corner of the world. Once we find the perfect diamond that you are looking for, our master jewellers will then infuse our artistry, imagination and creativity to create exquisite one of a kind pieces of jewellery that will bring you joy.
Since we operate differently to a brick and mortar retail jeweller, we can offer our customers extremely competitive pricing, so you can always be sure that you are getting the best value for money from us. We provide transparency in all our pricing and the prices shown on our website are inclusive of GST. Caveat emptor: some diamond wholesalers can 'forget' to quote the GST on goods they sell which is non-compliant with law and very misleading for our customers. So take care when comparing prices to make sure you are comparing like with like.
At Monroe Yorke Diamonds, we aim to surpass our customer’s expectations by providing exceptional service at each stage of your customer journey: from sourcing your diamond, designing your one of a kind piece, delivering it under 6 weeks and complimentary after sales service.
