    THE KIMBERLEY PROCESS CERTIFICATION SCHEME

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a system initiated jointly by governments, the international diamond industry, and civil society representatives. Its purpose; as endorsed and supported by the United Nations, is to put an end to the global trade of conflict diamonds.

The certification is applicable to all rough diamonds mined since 1 January 2003, and under its regulations; rough diamonds require to be transported in sealed containers, with numbered certificates guaranteeing their conflict-free status.

Each participant country (82 to date) must apply the system to all rough diamonds they import and export. Failure to comply with any of the conditions set out could potentially lead to a participant being barred from the diamond trade.
