Buying Guide

Everything you need to know about cushion cut diamond engagement rings.

The cushion cut — sometimes called the pillow cut — has been a beloved diamond shape since the 19th century. Modern cushion cuts come in two main varieties: the standard cushion brilliant, which features a star-facet pattern similar to a round brilliant, and the modified cushion brilliant, which arranges facets differently for a distinctive crushed-ice or chunky sparkle pattern. When selecting a cushion diamond, colour can be slightly more visible than in round brilliants, so we generally recommend staying within the D–G colour range for white-metal settings. Our specialists are always available to guide you through the selection process.

How does a cushion cut diamond compare to a round brilliant?

While both shapes offer excellent brilliance, cushion cuts are known for producing more fire — those colourful flashes of light — whereas round brilliants maximise overall white-light return. Cushion cuts also have a softer, more romantic appearance thanks to their rounded corners, making them ideal for vintage-inspired designs.

What is the difference between a cushion brilliant and a modified cushion brilliant?

A cushion brilliant features a facet pattern similar to a round brilliant, producing broad, bold flashes of light. A modified cushion brilliant rearranges the facets beneath the stone, which can create either a crushed-ice sparkle or a chunkier pattern depending on the specific cut. Both are beautiful — the choice comes down to which sparkle style you prefer.

Is colour more visible in cushion cut diamonds?

Yes, cushion cuts tend to retain slightly more colour than round brilliants due to their facet structure. For white-metal settings such as platinum or white gold, we recommend a colour grade of G or higher to ensure the diamond faces up white. In yellow or rose gold settings, you can comfortably choose H or I colour for excellent value.

What is the difference between crushed-ice and chunky cushion cuts?

Crushed-ice cushion cuts display a fine, shimmering sparkle pattern that resembles light dancing on crushed ice. Chunky cushion cuts show larger, more defined facets that produce bold flashes of light and dark contrast. Neither is objectively better — it is a matter of personal taste, and we encourage you to view both styles in our Melbourne showroom.

What is the ideal length-to-width ratio for a cushion cut diamond?

For a classic square cushion, look for a ratio between 1.00 and 1.05. If you prefer a slightly elongated rectangular cushion, ratios of 1.10 to 1.20 offer an elegant, flattering look on the finger. Our team can help you find the perfect proportions during a free consultation.
