The Engagement Ring Guide

Everything you need to know, explained simply.

One

Choosing an engagement ring — where to start

The best engagement ring is not the biggest one, or the one that follows a rule. It's the one that looks like it was always meant for the person wearing it. So start with them, not with a checklist. Notice the jewellery they already reach for — delicate or bold, plain or detailed. Notice the colour of the metal they wear most. From there, four decisions shape the ring: the style of setting, the diamond, the metal, and the budget you're comfortable with. None of it has to be done alone — guiding people through exactly these choices is what our specialists do every day, and there is no wrong question to ask.

Two

Engagement ring styles

The setting is the ring's personality. A few designs account for most of what people choose:

A solitaire is a single diamond on a clean band — the most classic engagement ring there is, and the one that lets the stone speak for itself. A halo rings the centre diamond with a circle of smaller diamonds, adding sparkle and making the centre stone look larger — a hidden halo tucks that detail beneath the stone, visible only from the side. A three-stone ring sets a diamond either side of the centre, often said to represent a couple's past, present and future. A side-stone design carries diamonds along the band itself, for a continuous line of light. Beyond these, a bezel setting wraps the diamond in a smooth rim of metal for a modern, secure look, and a gemstone ring swaps the centre diamond for a coloured stone. Prefer a ring of his own? See our men's engagement rings.

Three

Choosing your diamond — the 4Cs

A diamond's beauty and value come down to four characteristics, the "4Cs":

Cut is the most important, and the one people underestimate. It describes how well a diamond has been cut to return light — a well-cut diamond is brighter and more alive than a poorly cut one of the same size. Colour grades how close to colourless a white diamond is, from D (colourless) down. Clarity measures the tiny natural marks inside the stone; many are invisible without magnification. Carat is the diamond's weight — not the same as its visible size, which also depends on cut and shape. You don't need the top grade in every category. A diamond chosen with a little expert guidance — strong cut, a colour and clarity that look flawless to the eye — often looks just as beautiful as a far more expensive one. Our guide to diamond carat weight explains size and weight in more detail.

Four

Diamond shapes

The shape of the diamond sets the whole tone of the ring. The round brilliant is the most popular and the most fiery. Oval and pear shapes look elegant and elongate the finger. The cushion is soft and romantic; the emerald cut is clean, architectural and understated; the princess cut is crisp and modern. Marquise and radiant cuts offer something a little less expected. It is always worth trying a few shapes on the hand — they wear very differently.

Five

Natural or lab-grown diamonds

Monroe Yorke offers both, and we'll never push you toward one. A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over billions of years — it carries genuine rarity and a sense of the extraordinary, and holds its place as the traditional choice. A lab-grown diamond is created in a matter of months in a controlled environment; it is chemically, physically and optically identical to a natural diamond — a real diamond in every sense — and typically costs 40–60% less. That difference lets the same budget reach a larger or higher-quality stone. Our natural diamonds are GIA-certified and our lab-grown diamonds IGI-certified, so whichever you choose, its quality is independently verified. It is a personal decision about what you value most — and a good one to talk through with a specialist.

Six

Metals

Engagement rings in this collection are crafted in 18ct gold, in three colours. White gold is the most popular — bright and contemporary, it makes a white diamond look whiter still. Yellow gold is warm and timeless, and has had a strong revival in recent years. Rose gold is soft, romantic and a little distinctive. The metal also affects everyday wear and skin tone, so it's worth seeing each against the hand. Platinum is available for couples who would like it — ask our specialists.

Seven

What an engagement ring costs in Australia — honestly

You may have heard you should spend two, or three, months' salary on an engagement ring. It's worth knowing where that came from: it was a diamond-industry advertising line from last century, not a rule. The right amount to spend is simply what feels comfortable for you.

What actually drives the price is the diamond. Carat weight, whether the stone is natural or lab-grown, and its cut, colour and clarity move the cost far more than the metal or the setting do. In Australia, engagement ring prices generally run from around $3,000 to $15,000, with many couples spending between $5,000 and $8,000 — but there is no "should" in that range. Monroe Yorke engagement rings start from $1,579, choosing a lab-grown diamond stretches a budget considerably further, and every ring can be adjusted to suit yours. Tell us your budget honestly and we will show you the most beautiful ring it can buy — never the other way around.

Eight

Made to order, or designed from scratch

Every ring in this collection can be made to order — your choice of diamond, metal and finger size, crafted for you rather than taken from a case. And if you have something specific in mind, our jewellers design bespoke engagement rings from the very beginning: an idea, a sketch, a 3D rendering you approve before anything is made, and then the ring itself, hand-finished. It is the same care whether you start from our collection or a blank page. A bespoke ring typically takes a few weeks to complete — begin with a private appointment and our designers will take it from there.

Questions, answered

Engagement ring FAQs

What does an engagement ring cost in Australia?
In Australia, engagement rings generally range from about $3,000 to $15,000, with many couples spending between $5,000 and $8,000. The diamond drives most of the cost — its carat weight, whether it's natural or lab-grown, and its cut, colour and clarity. Monroe Yorke engagement rings start from $1,579, and every ring can be adjusted to suit your budget.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
Whatever is comfortable for you. The old idea of spending two or three months' salary was an advertising slogan, not a rule — there is no correct figure. Decide on a budget that feels right, tell us honestly, and we will show you the most beautiful ring it can buy. Choosing a lab-grown diamond is one easy way to make a budget go further.
What's the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?
A natural diamond formed in the earth over billions of years; a lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment in months. They are chemically, physically and optically identical — a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. The difference is origin, rarity and price: lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40–60% less. We offer both, certified by the GIA or IGI.
What are the 4Cs of a diamond?
The 4Cs are cut, colour, clarity and carat. Cut — how well the diamond returns light — matters most to how beautiful it looks. Colour grades how close to colourless it is; clarity measures the tiny natural marks inside it; and carat is its weight. You don't need the top grade in every category; a well-balanced diamond chosen with guidance can look flawless to the eye for far less.
Which diamond shape is best for an engagement ring?
There is no single best shape — it's personal. The round brilliant is the most popular and the most sparkling. Oval and pear shapes elongate the finger; cushion is soft and romantic; emerald cut is clean and understated; princess cut is crisp and modern. It's well worth trying a few shapes on the hand, as they wear quite differently.
How do I choose a ring my partner will love?
Start with the jewellery they already wear — delicate or bold, plain or detailed, and which metal colour appears most often. That tells you a great deal. If you're still unsure, you don't have to guess: book a private appointment and our specialists will help you narrow it down, or design something with you.
How do I find out my partner's ring size without spoiling the surprise?
A few quiet ways work well: borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and have us measure it, or check the inside diameter against one of ours. If all else fails, choose the ring — almost any engagement ring can be resized afterward, and we'll take care of it.
Can I customise a ring, or design one from scratch?
Both. Every ring in this collection can be made to order in your choice of diamond, metal and size. And if you have your own vision, our jewellers design fully bespoke engagement rings from an initial idea through to a 3D rendering you approve before crafting begins. Start with an appointment and our designers will guide it.
How long does a made-to-order or custom ring take?
A made-to-order ring from the collection is generally ready within a few weeks. A fully bespoke design takes a little longer, as it includes the design and approval stages. If you're working toward a particular date, tell us early and we'll plan the timeline with you.
Are your diamonds certified and ethically sourced?
Yes. Our natural diamonds are certified by the GIA and our lab-grown diamonds by the IGI — independent gemmological laboratories — so the quality of your diamond is verified, not just described. Our diamonds are ethically sourced and Kimberley Process certified.
Do you offer men's engagement rings?
Yes — see our men's engagement rings. Our jewellers can also design a men's engagement ring bespoke, or create a matching pair.
What's included with every Monroe Yorke engagement ring?
Every engagement ring comes with an independent diamond certificate (GIA or IGI), a lifetime warranty, free insured shipping across Australia, and a 14-day return policy — along with the guidance of our specialists, before and after your purchase.
