An editorial

A gold chain is the most worn piece of jewellery in any collection. The right one becomes part of you. Worn alone for the clean line of solid gold against skin, or layered with a pendant that matters. Either way, the chain needs to be made well, and made to last.

Our gold chain edit is made in Italy by master goldsmiths from 100% certified Australian gold. Italy has been the world's centre for fine gold chain craft for centuries, the place where the techniques that shape every belcher, curb, cable and box link were perfected. Australian gold is among the most ethically sourced and best documented in the world, refined through the Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint. We bring the two together so the chain you wear is made by the people who do this best, from gold whose origin you can trace.

Every chain in the collection is solid 9ct or 18ct gold, available in Yellow, White or Rose. Generally in stock and shipped within 5 to 7 business days. If you'd like guidance on weight, length or which style suits the pendant you have in mind, book a 15-minute call and our master jewellers will walk you through it.

A field guide

Choosing your chain style

Eight chain styles in the collection, each with a different character. A short guide to help you choose.

Belcher also called Rolo

The classic round-link chain, also called rolo. Each link is a thick circular loop joined to the next. Sits flat against the skin, catches light from every angle. The most-requested chain for layering a single pendant and the safest first-chain choice.

Curb standard & diamond-cut

Interlocking flat links lying parallel to the skin. The traditional men's gold chain shape, increasingly worn by women for its weight and clean line. Available in standard and diamond-cut finishes (the diamond-cut version is hand-faceted for extra sparkle).

Cable everyday-fine

The simplest chain construction. Uniform oval links joined in alternating directions. The lightest and most everyday style, ideal for fine-weight pendants and minimalist layering.

Box fluid & modern

Small square links in a fluid, snake-like line. Smooth against the skin, modern in profile, holds a pendant centred without twisting. The most contemporary of the classic chains.

Anchor diamond cut

Oval links with a bar across the centre, a nautical reference. The diamond-cut finish facets each link for high sparkle. A heavier, more architectural choice with a quietly masculine read.

Figaro Italian classic

Alternating long and short links in a repeating pattern, typically 3:1. An Italian classic, often worn as a stand-alone statement chain. Heavier presence on the neck.

Rope decorative texture

Twisted strands of fine gold forming a textured, rope-like surface. The most decorative style. Catches light like multiple chains at once. Worn solo for visual interest.

Paper Clip modern & architectural

Elongated rectangular links in a chain that reads as modern and architectural. The most contemporary style in the collection, and the one that has become a quietly chic everyday choice for both men and women. Worn solo or with a single oversized pendant.

Master jeweller notes

How to choose your chain

01

Gold purity: 9ct or 18ct

9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold, alloyed with stronger metals for hardness. It's the most practical choice for daily wear and the most affordable per gram. 18ct gold is 75% pure gold, with the deeper colour and weight that 9ct can't match. For an everyday chain you'll wear under a shirt, 9ct is sensible. For a piece you'll wear visibly with a pendant or layered, 18ct rewards the upgrade.

02

Weight and width

Chain weight (measured in millimetres of link width) determines how the chain reads on the neck. Under 1mm: invisible-fine, for delicate pendants. 1 to 2mm: everyday, layerable. 2 to 3mm: visible statement, worn solo. 3mm and over: significant presence, traditionally men's but increasingly worn by women for the heft. Try a chain on with the pendant you intend to pair it with before deciding.

03

Length

Standard chain lengths in Australia: 40cm sits at the collarbone (choker length), 45cm sits just below (the classic women's everyday length), 50cm sits mid-chest (for layering or pendant display), 55-60cm sits below the bust (men's standard or for longer pendants). If you're sizing for a pendant, add 2-5cm to the length you'd otherwise pick so the pendant sits at the right point on the chest.

Frequently asked

Questions about gold chains

Where are Monroe Yorke gold chains made?
Our gold chains are made in Italy by master goldsmiths, from 100% certified Australian gold. Italy is the world's leading centre for fine gold chain manufacturing; Australian gold is among the most ethically and verifiably sourced gold in the world. We bring the two together so the chain you wear is made by the people who do this best, from gold whose origin you can trace.
Is the gold solid or plated?
Every chain in the collection is solid 9ct or 18ct gold throughout. Not plated, not gold-filled, not vermeil. Solid gold doesn't tarnish, doesn't wear thin, and doesn't expose a base metal underneath as the surface ages. It is the only metal worth wearing daily.
9ct or 18ct: which should I choose?
9ct gold (37.5% pure) is harder, more affordable per gram, and the practical choice for daily wear and everyday-fine chains. 18ct gold (75% pure) has a deeper, warmer colour, more weight in the hand, and is the right choice for chains worn visibly or as statement pieces. Both are solid gold and both will last a lifetime with reasonable care.
How long does delivery take?
Most chains are in stock and ship within 5 to 7 business days, fully insured anywhere in Australia. If a specific style or length is currently unavailable, we'll let you know the lead time at the point of order. Customisation requests (longer than standard, mixed-metal links) take an additional 2 to 3 weeks.
How do I clean and care for a solid gold chain?
Solid gold is one of the lowest-maintenance metals you can own. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth weekly is enough to keep it bright. Avoid wearing chains in chlorinated pools (chlorine attacks the alloy in 9ct gold over time) and remove before applying perfumes or hair products. We offer free professional cleaning and inspection at any of our studios in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
Can I customise a length or pair a chain with a pendant?
Yes to both. Standard chain lengths are 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60cm. Custom lengths are available on request with a 2 to 3 week lead time. For pendant pairings, our master jewellers can advise on the right chain weight for the pendant's size and the look you're going for. Book a 15-minute call to talk it through.
