Everything you need to know

Choose with confidence

The questions our master jewellers hear most often. If yours isn't here, talk to us — every studio offers a free 15-minute consultation, by phone or in person.

What carat weight should I choose?

Customers typically buy between 0.10ct and 2.00ct each ear — the right size depends on what you'll wear them for. Our master jewellers' guide:

  • 0.10–0.20ct each — The whisper. Barely-there sparkle for first studs, second piercings, or layered looks.
  • 0.25–0.35ct each — Subtle elegance. Perfect for graduations, first-time gifts, and delicate everyday wear.
  • 0.50ct each — Our top-selling size. Visible without being showy. Ideal for everyday wear and milestone gifts.
  • 0.75–1.00ct each — Classic statement. Catches the light from across a room. The traditional anniversary upgrade.
  • 1.50–2.00ct each — Heirloom-scale. For 25th anniversaries, 60th birthdays, and pieces meant to be passed down.

Looking for something even larger? Our master jewellers will design bespoke studs above 2.00ct on commission — book a consultation to discuss.

Still unsure? Use the ear visualiser above to see exactly how each size sits.

Natural vs lab grown — what's the difference?

Identical to the eye, the microscope, and the lab. Both are real diamonds — pure carbon crystals with the same brilliance, fire, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and certification standards.

The difference is origin:

  • Natural diamonds formed billions of years ago, deep in the earth, and were mined. GIA certified. They hold long-term value as collectibles and heirlooms.
  • Lab grown diamonds are grown in controlled high-pressure / high-temperature chambers that replicate the earth's process — in weeks rather than aeons. IGI certified. They cost 30–60% less for the same size and quality, leaving room for a larger stone or a finer setting.

Both come with our lifetime warranty. Use the toggle at the top of this page to compare prices side by side.

Push-back, screw-back, or lever-back?

The closure holds the stud in place. Three options, each with a purpose:

  • Push-back — The traditional friction-back. Quick to put on, slim profile, ideal for everyday wear.
  • Screw-back — Threads onto the post. The most secure option. We recommend it for stones above 1.00ct, frequent travellers, and active wearers.
  • Lever-back — A hinged closure with a small lever. Comfortable for sensitive ears and impossible to lose — but adds a small visual element behind the stud.

All closures come standard in the same metal as your setting. We can swap closures any time at any of our studios — free of charge for the life of the piece.

How do I care for them?

Diamond studs are designed to be worn — every day, in the shower, while you sleep. To keep them performing their best:

  • Warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush, once a week. Pat dry with a microfibre cloth.
  • Remove before applying perfume, hairspray, or self-tanner — these can dull the surface.
  • Bring them in once a year for a free professional clean and a 14-point security check at any Monroe Yorke studio.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals like chlorine over time — it weakens the prongs on yellow and rose gold.
Are they certified?

Every diamond above 0.25ct ships with a full grading certificate. Natural diamonds are graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), lab grown by the International Gemological Institute (IGI). Both certificates detail the 4 Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat) plus measurements and proportions — your diamond's unique fingerprint.

The certificate is yours to keep. For diamonds under 0.25ct, we provide a Monroe Yorke Diamonds certificate of authenticity prepared by our in-house master jeweller.

What's covered by the lifetime warranty?

Every Monroe Yorke piece is covered for life against manufacturing defects, prong wear, and post breakage. The warranty includes:

  • Free professional cleaning and polishing, any time.
  • Free re-tipping of prongs as they wear with daily life.
  • Free post replacement if it bends or breaks.
  • Free upgrades — bring an older stud back and we'll credit its full retail value toward an upgrade.

The warranty is non-transferable but covers the original purchaser for the life of the piece. Insurance against loss or theft is recommended separately — we partner with Q Report for diamond-specific cover, full appraisal documentation included.

Shipping, returns, and gift wrapping?

Shipping — Free insured shipping Australia-wide, dispatched within 10 business days of order confirmation. International shipping available on request — fully insured, signature required.

Returns — 14-day no-questions-asked returns on stock pieces. Custom designs and engraved pieces are excluded.

Gift wrapping — Every order ships in our signature presentation box, hand-tied with grosgrain ribbon. Add a handwritten note at checkout (free) or upgrade to our Anniversary Edition box (+ $45) with a personalised brass plate.
